markj99 visited on 3rd Jun 2025 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Cairnholy 5 Carved Stone is a horizontal panel embedded in a grassy field c. 0.5 mile N of Cairnholy Farm. It is difficult to locate without accurate GPS navigation. The horizontal slab is c. 45 yards NNW of the N end of the central rocky knoll located at NX 51628 54751. There are helpful pictures and directions on the main page.

A flat slab decorated with three very eroded cup-and-ring marks. Cairnholy 5 on ScotlandsPlaces.
Canmore record this cup and ring marked flat rock, 50 yards north of Cairnholy 4, as 'easy to miss' - see their entry for Canmore ID 63728 which tells us: "the marks comprise 3 faint cups and one ring; rubbing shows 4 concentric rings in one case. In 1912 there were 3 cup marks, each surrounded by 3 or 4 rings, each figure measuring some 10" in diameter." Their latest 1995 entry revises this to say: "Van Hoek describes eight cups in all, two with a single ring, one with up to three rings and two with four rings each, the latter two being 350mm in diameter. Naddair identifies twenty cups, one with a single ring, one with two rings, two with four rings each, and a more complex figure consisting of two cups, having one and two rings, all enclosed within a double ring."
