I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 18th Jun 2019 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Peter Hill Roundhouse: Part of the visitor experience at the Whithorn Museum. We arrived just after a small guided tour had started. We asked if we could go round after the tour had finished, but were told we could only get in while there was an official guide there. I cheekily asked if we could join the tour for 10 minutes, and to my surprise, were allowed to go in. I was really surprised and impressed by the inside of the roundhouse - the compartments for privacy, the central fire pits, and the sheer amount of room within it. Shame we didn't have time for the full tour, but I was so keen to see the early Christian stones in the museum.

Ancient Village or Settlement in Dumfries and Galloway

Whilst the Peter Hill Roundhouse is part of Whithorn Museum, it deserves its own site page as an attraction/place to see in its own right.

Measuring 13 metres in diameter and 9 metres high, it was built by a team of volunteers in 2016/17 to "show how people lived in Galloway in the fifth century BC". For more information see the article which features in the Galloway News. The recreation of the roundhouse "was inspired by the discovery of a large Iron Age settlement at the Black Loch which was in such a good state of preservation that it was able to act as a 2,500 year old template."

Access to the Roundhouse is through a guided tour, included in the tickets for the Museum.

All mod-cons for the 5th century BC. Note the skeins of coloured yarn hung to dry in the background. Lovely reconstruction, wish we'd had time for the full tour. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Standing just inside the entrance to this (what seemed to be enormous) roundhouse, with its central fire pit. I was surprised at how large and homely it felt. It was very nicely constructed.
