Anne T visited on 18th Jun 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Holed Stone/Crow Stone, Crouse: Coming to these last two sites marked the start of our return journey back to Northumberland, and I wasn’t really ready to go back! This stone stood near the northern edge of a field of grass, just east of the B7052, and south of the White Cairn at Crouse. The field of grass had just been cut and the farmer and his various tractors and trailers were collecting the grass in the surrounding fields and transporting it back to Crouse farmhouse, just to the south and on the other side of the road. Because of all the traffic on the road, we dumped the car in a wide gated field entrance at NX 36446 55808, ready to run back to the car if we needed to move it. We got into the field with the holed stone through a gate at NX 36533 55647, walking NE towards it; it was further than it looked, having to step over the mounds of cut grass. A very nice spot, with the Galloway Hills a dark blue/grey in the distance.

Crow Stone (Wigtown) submitted by Anne T : Approaching the stone from the south west. The darker blue/grey streak just above centre right of the photo are the distant Galloway Hills. Strange, as I remember them much more visible on the horizon at the time of our visit. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This Standing Stone in Dumfries and Galloway is approximately 1.5 metres tall with a hole in it a third of a metre from the top. A second stone stood near it until the late 19th century. In the adjacent field a few metres away is White Cairn.

For more information see Canmore ID 62872 which records from a Name Book of 1848 that there was a second stone some 15 yards to the east. Both stones were 'traditionally said to have been associated with marriage ceremonies'. An entry from 1975 reports that "The removal and destruction of the second stone are said by W Armstrong, antiquarian collector, to have taken place about 1857" and adds the perforation: "about the centre of the breadth and is formed by the connection of two opposing bowl-shaped depressions, about 9" wide and as many deep, by a channel 4in long."

Crow Stone (Wigtown)
Crow Stone (Wigtown) submitted by Anne T : Whilst I was photographing the Holed Stone, my husband went for a wander over to White Cairn. I got an excited shout saying "you can see through the hole in the stone from the top of the cairn". I rushed over, put the camera lens on maximum zoom, and indeed you could. Just a glimmer of light, but what the hole sights on from this point, I'm not sure. Still an interesting observation, and not one t... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Crow stone (Wigtown) submitted by kelpie : A holed stone at NX 36637 55606. I could not gain access to the field and the shot was taken with a long lens, hand-held, thus the poor quality.

Crow Stone (Wigtown)
Crow Stone (Wigtown) submitted by Anne T : A view of the hole through the stone from its north eastern side - the hole was 'twisted' slightly, and not a straight line through the stone.

Crow Stone (Wigtown)
Crow Stone (Wigtown) submitted by Anne T : A view through the hole in the stone from its western side. I initially thought the top of the stone had been broken off and it had been pieced back together carefully, but looking at the stone from the reverse side, the 'cracks' must be shallow natural fissures that have weathered slightly.

There is a sign at Kirkinner Church, underneath their cross slab, which tell us about this stone, and which reads:

The Old Bridal Stone at Crouse
This bridal or holed stone lies close to the River Bladnoch, three miles north-east of Cormalzie on Crouse (Crows) Farm. Couples used to use it to make a marriage contract by joining hands through a single hole near the top of the five foot high granite boulder. According to tradition, a carved cross slab originally in Kirkinner churchyard with four circular apertures was used for the same purpose.”

I went to this stone with Lucy and put my hand through the stone to hers and we have been together for 16 years now. There is magic in the stone.
