Barsalloch submitted by h_fenton : Barsalloch Promontory Fort viewed from roughly north. Kite Aerial Photograph 17 September 2010 (Vote or comment on this photo)
An impressively located promontory fort on top of the cliffs overlooking Luce Bay and the Irish Sea. Parking is available at the foot of the cliff on the A747 and a climb up the steep steps is rewarded by a decent fort with well preserved ramparts.

This fort is recorded as Canmore ID 62816 which adds: "promontory fort situated on the edge of the coastal slope. It is sub-square measuring internally 42.0m N-S by 44.0m and is contained on three sides by two earthen ramparts with a medial ditch; steep coastal slopes on the south- east provide strong natural defences. The ditch, best preserved on the north-west and south-east, is 10.0m wide and up to 3.5m deep; the banks are up to 2.0m wide and 1.1m high. The entrance is not apparent and the earthwork has been mutilated by a field bank and track on the north east side."

The banks are in good shape, and the views are really good. It’s dated to 2000 years ago, and had maybe 4 or 5 houses inside. Canmore says-‘42.0m N-S by 44.0m and is contained on three sides by two earthen ramparts with a medial ditch’. It is NOT medieval! The area has evidence of human encampments early in the 5th millennium BC.

The sign says closed as of 1/4/22 but that’s a disclaimer because the path, steps and rail are in need of much repair. It’s not dangerous of you take care.

The Canmore entry for Barsalloch - see Canmore ID 62816 identifies this as being a medieval structure. Their record shows some great aerial photographs of this site.

Nicely situated fort. As with all the sea-facing 'heughs' in this region, the ground slants upwards toward the edge, fiving an excellent view inland, and up & down the coast.

Recommended - walk along the (inland) B road which connects Monreith and PortWilliam villages till you reach the area around the entrance to Blairbuie Farm, and look towards the fort (which is about half-a-mile away from this point).

There, you'll see a view of the ramparts, and ditches, in stark contrast against the skyline. Very striking.
