Round Cairn in Pembrokeshire

I visited this cairn Dec 2004 in order to consider it for scheduling. It is a wee cracker - in my opinion very likely to be a chambered tomb. The capstone is enormous - and there are the traces of a possible forecourt on the SW side. My field notes record that "The stone-built cairn is ovoid on plan, with a flattened rear on the NE end and a rubble-filled forecourt visible on the SW. The cairn measures about 13m from NE to SW by about 12m transversely and stands up to 1.5m in height on its SW side. The cairn has subsided into a water channel, its central chamber and NW side having collapsed towards the NW. A large capstone rests above the collapsed chamber; this measures 2.7m in length by 2.3m transversely and up to 0.6m in thickness. Two possible splayed stretches of faced walling are visible forming a rubble-filled forecourt."
If Neolithic, this is an exciting site, complete (albeit very ruinous) and with great archaeological potential. Compare with trashed tomb nearby at SN 165 328!

Carn Menyn (Gate Post?)
Carn Menyn (Gate Post?) submitted by sem : Gate Post? The N side(away from camera) has a hole that has been drilled as opposed to a cupmark, probably to use as a gate hanging. BUT, there are no signs of a field boundary within 20yds. I don't know why someone would put a 5ft stone here without reason. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Carn Menyn (Gate Post?)
Carn Menyn (Gate Post?) submitted by Horatio : The modern worked stone sitting next to a collection of smaller Bluestones that possibly belong to some sort of structure but who knows? It has me perplexed as why a modern dressed stone should be sited here. In the background is Carn Menyn (site of Stonehenge Bluestones?)

Carn Menyn (Gate Post?)
Carn Menyn (Gate Post?) submitted by Horatio : A well worked block of Preseli Bluestone, (Spotted Dolerite). Seems a very modern working and I walked around for awhile trying to work out the reason for it being sited here. It sits in the vicinity of a heap of smaller bluestones, that almost look like some kind of buried/destroyed structure. But this stone is definitely of a 'modern dressing'. So I left the site being none the wiser but i...

Darvill and Wainwright's excavations revealed that this was cairn was constructed after 1420-1260 BC and covered a stone circle set within a henge-like enclosure. Source: Current Archaeology

Hello! Most definitely recommended for scheduling! The trashed tomb I referred to is on private land, now incorporated into a field bank. It is listed on the MP as ‘Mountain’. It is interesting to compare the two in terms of survival and destruction. We know of many dolmens, robbed of their stone cairns - and of many possible chambers, their form broken up and dispersed. But I would wager there are surviving tombs as yet unrecorded as such, 'complete' as cairns but interpreted as being of Bronze Age provenance.

Exciting! I hope your recommendation is for scheduling! Is the trashed tomb the Croesmihangel Barrow listed in the Portal?
