Carn Alw
Carn Alw submitted by Horatio : Carn Alw hill fort from the west, hard to see but from about the level of the dip in the crags running to the right is a broad, carefully delimited zone of 'chevaux-de-frise'. Not easy to see in this photo and stupidly I was stood amongst it admiring and commenting on it and I totally forgot to get 'the photo'. Where the path leads in from the viewers point, it goes through the defensive wall an... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Carn Alw
Carn Alw submitted by Horatio : Chevaux de Frise at Carn Alw Hillfort. I remembered this time to take some photos of it! Chevaux-de-frise is a term used to describe the normally stone (as seen in this picture) but could be wooden stakes placed upright in the ground outside the walls of early fortifications with the intention of making access more difficult for an approaching enemy, be they on foot or on horse back. Th... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Carn Alw
Carn Alw submitted by Couplands : Looking NW. Uniform channel cut through the cheval de frise and beyond, possibly had a wall built higher than this? Joins up with the side of the entrance wall, but doesn’t seem that it would have been accessible from it. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Carn Alw
Carn Alw submitted by Couplands : Viewed from NW. Large roughly spherical boulder surround by circular bank. Roughly east of this is a vertical slot in the natural rock with a small rock capping the opening - I wonder if this might have been to align the rising sun with the large boulder? Carn Alw
Carn Alw submitted by Couplands : Viewed from south. Photos don’t do this site justice - easy to see various elements such as walls, chevalier de frise and entrance. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Carn Alw
Carn Alw submitted by Horatio : Carn Alw Iron age hillfort (or enclosure) catching the sun. Back in my 'local favorite' place of the Preseli Hills, this was taken from the foot of the WNW slope of Foel Drygarn hillfort. I was going to head over as I've not been to Carn Alw for a while now but I just know how boggy that ground would be in front of me after the latest showers, so I will save that trip for another day and just ap... Carn Alw
Carn Alw submitted by Horatio : Carn Alw hill fort, this is taken form the southernmost rock outcrop overlooking the the level (habitation?) platform that is visible on the lower right with the grass and the top of the defensive wall running off to the right of the photo. But on lower left arching to the right, can be seen part of the broad, zone of 'chevaux-de-frise' on the south and southwest of the hillfort. The eastern sid...

Carn Alw Boulder
Carn Alw Boulder submitted by JonathanOwen : Boulder in enclosure at Carn Alw. Impressive, dark but shiny boulder that twinkles in the sunlight. What kind go rock is this? Is the shiny element Silica? This rock must have been admired if not revered! (1 comment)

Re: Carn Alw by Anonymous on Friday, 18 August 2017
Steep cliffs give defence to the East. To the West there is a platform, apparently man-made with a short entrance pathway about 2m wide.
Access by parking at SN145350 then follow the track leading to an ill-defined bridleway to Mirianog-granog, where there is what looks like a chambered tomb standing up to 1m high which does not appear on the OS maps. Then make your way across country towards Carnalw. The whole way is rather wet.
