Hoyle's Mouth Cave
Hoyle's Mouth Cave submitted by Horatio : Top end of Bear chamber, with Jess showing the way out or rather the access to the East fissure. This stage without any artificial light its total darkness. It would be hard going to escape in that blackness. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A natural cave in Pembrokeshire from which excavations, from 1862-1878/9 and 1968, revealed 'Later Upper Palaeolithic' to earlier Iron Age, Romano-British & later material

Hoyle's Mouth Cave
Hoyle's Mouth Cave submitted by Horatio : Myself coming through the 'squeeze' actually not that much of a squeeze from the back of the cave system, from Reindeer Chamber towards Bear Chamber (Vote or comment on this photo)

Hoyle's Mouth Cave
Hoyle's Mouth Cave submitted by Horatio : Dom Northeast (megp member) in Bear Chamber (see map on here) where trench no 5 excavated in 1996. On the right is the entrance to the 'squeeze' (see other pic) that leads to the back of the cave system and hence Reindeer Chamber and trench no 6 excavation site. The things you do on your day off. Hoyle's Mouth Cave
Hoyle's Mouth Cave submitted by Horatio : A map of the cave system and also trenches dug for modern archeology. I've put this (the map) in to help with the other 6 images I've submitted. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Hoyle's Mouth Cave
Hoyle's Mouth Cave submitted by Horatio : So if I'm correct I'm about 160 feet in. I'm crouched with my back on the back of the Reindeer chamber and for me the end of the system . There was a 'squeeze' I could've got through to get a little further but it didnt look worth the while or hassle with Jess with me too. So above Jess's head is our exit out (the way we came in and notice that blue frosting again ..I couldn't stop touching ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Hoyle's Mouth Cave
Hoyle's Mouth Cave submitted by Horatio : Access between Bear and Reindeer chamber Quite deep now in to the system. It was at this point that I realised 2 things, if a collapsed occurred. 1. I was on my own (ok 15 yr old dog with me) 2. No one knew where I was, didn't mention to my wife where I was off, just mentioned something about 'Tenby way'. She's used to me disappearing for the day, couldve been a lifetime this time! ... (3 comments)

Hoyle's Mouth Cave
Hoyle's Mouth Cave submitted by Horatio : Looking back possible about 60 feet and about halfway down the East fissure (see map) On the ceiling can be seen a kind of frost work (beautiful) consisting of carbonate of lime. Around this stage of the cave and an added bonus for me being an arachnophile there are loads of Cave spiders (Meta menardi) that live right on the edge of the light as the adult spiders are photophobic. Not so much ...

Hoyle's Mouth Cave
Hoyle's Mouth Cave submitted by Horatio : Looking out from about 20-25 feet past the entrance and can be seen at this stage it's quite cavernous but this soon changes as you enter into the system, and as you lose natural light. This looks out over the marsh and plains of the Ritec Valley that at one time quite large boats/ships could pass, so back in the Mesolithic this 'almost a stream' would've been a sizeable river with an abundance o...

Hoyle's Mouth Cave
Hoyle's Mouth Cave submitted by Horatio : I'd heard about this cave and for some reason have not visited until today. If I'd known it was going to this interesting I would've come years ago. This is the entrance to the cave that overlooks the Ritec valley at Penally. Access is easy and quite close from above the lane (Trefloyne Lane) and a gently climb up a small path over fallen trees leads to the cave entrance. (2 comments)

In this video, we explore Hoyle's Mouth Cave, as well as Longberry Bank Cave and cover their history, archaeology and legends. We also head to the neolithic cromlech at Manorbier Beach named The King's Quoit.
