Tarbert (Gigha)
Tarbert (Gigha) submitted by DavidHoyle : Stone looking NW. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A standing stone at the north of the isle of Gigha - it now leans considerably out of the vertical towards the east and the top is divided into two peaks by a deep indentation due to the weathering of a natural fissure. Said to be a prehistoric lunar observatory by Alexander Thom - see comment and simulation below on our page from David Hoyle supporting this.

A prominent standing stone situated close to the east side of the public road. Known as "The Druids' Stone", it measures 0.9m by 0.41m at the base, and rises to a height of 2.34m; the longer axis is aligned north and south.

Thom is spot on with this - it would have been an excellent lunar observatory with excellent views of the moon rise in the NE over Meall Reamer and then setting over Jura in the NW. Views of the moonset would have been especially good.

The Giant's Tooth is the name of a well known standing stone on the island of Gigha. A friend, who'd recently holidayed in the area, showed me two postcards of it tonight.
Patrick Mackie's 2005 photo of the stone is on the site page under 'Nearby images from Geograph Britain and Ireland'.

There's a mention of it on this website:
http://www.walkingstories.com/region.cfm/region_page_ID/5/country_ID/242/menu_ID/2/region_ID/38/title/Isle%20of%20Gigha
Quote:

"History

Although Gigha may seem relatively inaccessible today, in the Viking period, when most travel and trade was by sea, it would have been close to an important communications route up and down the west coast of Scotland. A number of carved stones give clues about early cultures. The ruined church at Kilchattan dates from the 13th century, with some very old gravestones in the churchyard.

The Giant's Tooth - also known as the Hanging Stone - is perhaps the best known of the prehistoric monuments on the island. It certainly looks like an enormous incisor embedded in the ground, but as the latter name suggests, it is believed it was used as a place of execution at one time. Today the Giant's Tooth is featured in the Heritage Trust's emblem."
