Stone Circle in Mull. This 13.4m diameter circle originally consisted of 9 stones, one of which has disappeared and been replaced with a small boulder. The stones range in height from 1.2m to 2m and have flat faces faced inwards. There are 3 outliers, the nearest of which is 0.85m high and lies just to the SE, the tallest 2.7m to the SW.

Set in a natural amphitheatre formed by the surrounding hills, this is a magical place.

Can be marshy to get to.

I visited this site during the summer of 1999 and have some excellent photos of the circle with mist shrouded mountains in the background. I am not a professional mystic, but I do have an affinity with stones and ancient sites, and this place is very magical.

Upon touching the outer "broken stone" mentioned above I experienced a vision; the stone was originally meant for the circle and was damaged during transportation, an angry shaman overseeing the circle construction violently attacked a worker responsible. The is a violent and sad energy associated with this particular stone. The other stones and the tree circle in the pasture leading to the circle radiated energy of ancient rituals. Hope this not too aerie fairy, but its what I experienced.

My wife and I visited here at Easter 2003, having driven from Tobermory down to the south west quadrant, via a rather meandering track, to Lochbuie.

This is the most significant area of Mull in neolithic terms, and set in a 3/4 bowl which even Burl was moved to comment on - "Few rings could be more evocative". Druid's Field, as it is known, comprises: one standing stone, a circle, not one but two outliers, and a ruined kerb cairn. The standing stone is quite large, though the top has been broken off at some time in the past. The circle originally had 9 stones, one has gone but has been replaced by a boulder. Two large outliers stand fairly close by, both reasonably tall, and a rather ruined kerb circle hides in a clump of trees about 100m away.

We spent quite some time looking around here, enjoying the scenery and the warm breeze, before slowly traipsing back towards Tobermory, dinner, and a bottle of wine as the sun set.
