It is most unusual to have a dedicated car park and path leading to a well preserved chambered cairn. Barpa Langais was a highlight on my Hebridean tour.

No wonder H-Fenton felt uncomfortable taking pictures from right inside....we decided to just take photos through the entrance! Date of visit: 9 May 2011

Like many Hebrides cairns, located well below the hill top. Langass is intervisible with the many cairns to the NW to NE.
I didn’t feel any urge to go inside. There is no means of rescue if it collapses further.

Sounding more like a mercenary from Star Wars than an archaeological site [good one - MegP Ed], Barpa Langass is, in fact, a Neolithic Chambered tomb located in North Uist.

Barpa Langass is classified as a Hebridean styled roundcairn which are defined by their simple, round form, slightly pronounced funnel entrances, narrow entrance passages and simple chambers. The earliest of these chambered cairns incorporate circles of upright stones known as peristaliths. These stones wrap around the cairns creating a stone circle. Virtually none of these sites have been excavated in modern times and therefore we know very little about them.

The internal passageway and chamber were seemingly remodelled in antiquity, probably after a collapse. However, the site has also suffered considerable disturbance over the last 200 years. In the late nineteenth century, a second chamber was said to be accessible by a passage from the north side. By 1970 this chamber was no longer visible.

Access inside Barpa Langais is currently (September 2012) closed off, there is the following notice:

    NOTICE


During May 2011 part of the entrance
passage collapsed and the roof of the
passage is currently unsafe in its present
condition. The Landlords have been
advised to restrict access to the Cairn until
the stones have been restored to their
former position.

We therefore regret that we have had to
temporarily close the Cairn to public
access and will endeavour to ensure that
the restoration work takes place as soon as
possible.

There seem to be some stones displaced perhaps in the time between jeffrep's phots in 2008 and ours of May 2011.

This may be due to work carried out intentionally, or they could be recent falls, so I thought I should highlight the changes! I will draw the attention of relevant agencies to these as well.....unless they are perhaps regular visitors to the Portal?

A round chambered cairn of over 80 feet in diameter and about 16 feet high, Barpa Langais is located on the north side of Beinn Langais on No. Uist in the Western Isles. The entrance passage is located on the east side of the cairn. The internal chamber is rectangular and is roughly 13 x 6 feet. The outer kerb of the cairn consists of pointed stones. Nearby, on the south side of Beinn Langais, is the Pobull Fhinn Stone Circle overlooking Loch Langais.

Take care when entering this tomb - there were loose wobbly stones underfoot at the entrance.
Standing uphill and looking directly towards the cairn with the passage entrance centrally placed, I noticed that beyond it is a hill on the far horizon that resembled a cairn. Coincidence perhaps?
