The remains of a chambered cairn and a wheel
house lie side by side near the summit of
Clettraval. The site is extraordinarily exposed to
south westerlies.

The Neolithic chambered
cairn was excavated by Lindsay Scott around
1934. It was built prior to peat growth, using
loose stone gathered from the ground surface.
The wheel-house was built within the mound of
the cairn after peat accumulation had made it
harder to get at loose stone. The builders clearly
chose this spot in order to use the cairn as their
quarry. Scott identified the circular structure as
Iron Age, but thought it was a fort on his first
visit.

In 1946 Scott returned to Clettraval to excavate
the circular building, now correctly identified as
a wheelhouse. Contemporary excavations at
.Jarlshof in Shetland apparently triggered this
new insight into the nature of the site. Scott
corresponded with the great men of the day
regarding Clettraval, including both Childe and
Wheeler. A young Stuart Piggott and his wife
worked on the Clettraval pottery.

The wheelhouse has eight bays arranged around
a central hearth. It is a near perfect circle,
diameter 8m, central area diameter just over 4m.
There are seven free-standing piers, leaving an
'aisle' of just 60cm between their outer ends and
the house wall. In place of the eighth pier, to
the right of the entrance, is a single large stone.
The tops of the piers were joined to the outer
wall by pairs of lintels arranged in a V-shapc,

(exactly as at Sollas: see photo, p. 5). The
entrance faced west, and Scott identifies what he
calls a drain running under it. Since this heads
straight towards the hearth, and would have
been useless for draining the f1oor of the
building, it would be better interpreted as a vent
or air duct for the fire. A ·wall chamber' on the
east might be the remnant of a souterrain,
perhaps even leading to the chamber of the
Neolithic cairn close by. There were secondary
buildings at the wheelhouse entrance, and a
detached rectangular piered building close by.
Scott saw these clements as contemporary with
the wheelhouse, but there is no convincing
evidence to connect them chronologically.
Crude later Iron Age 'squatter huts' had been
built atop the ruined wheelhouse. What appears
to have been a farmyard pond is an apparently
unique structure, constructed to the east, in the
forecourt of the Neolithic cairn.
