Stannon circle
Stannon circle submitted by Bladup : Stannon Stone Circle (Vote or comment on this photo)
On open moorland just south of Stannon china clay works, and seen from the road, this is a large uneven circle with between 70 and 80 remaining stones, and a diameter of between 40 and 43 metres. In places the stones are very close together and seem to touch, but in other places they are well spaced.

As with most circles on this part of Bodmin moor, the largest and most significant stones are triangular in shape, pointing upwards. At the southwest of the circle are a pair of reasonably large stones, a slightly greater distance apart than the norm, with a flat slab between them, which seem to perhaps form some sort of entrance to the circle.

About 80 metres to the northwest of the circle, at SX12518007 is a strange little line arrangement of four stones, two being very pointy topped, from where the circle appears on the skyline.

Access: Turn off B3266 up track towards Stannon china clay tips. Not far from track.

Update November 2019: The stone circle is scheduled as part of Historic England List Entry No. 1007764 (Stannon Stone Circle, prehistoric field system, hut circle settlement, cairns, cist, linear boundaries and medieval building north of Dinnever Hill), and recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 434396.

Stannon Circle features on a strong alignment that stretches from Carn Lês Boel near Land's End, Cornwall - the site of "Seahenge" by The Wash in Norfolk. It is a geometric solstice orientation & includes many ancient sites inc.; Boscawen-un st. circle, Lesingey Round, Perran Round, Men Gurtha etc. etc. The alignment is examined & followed by satellite in the following link;

Stannon stone circle , Bodmin Moor, Cornwall SX126800.

There is a central pillar, but this doesn’t appear to be very well embedded in the moor, and so might be a relatively modern addition. At the time of my visit, this stone was stained by some sort of red dye or paint on its top.
