Louden Hill circle
Louden Hill circle submitted by RoyG : Stone 26 introduced us to what was to become known affectionately as ‘Louden Man’ and along with the ‘Crow Stone’ (Stone 44) found later, were to become popular with walkers passing by that looked in to see what we were up to. Lying buried for many years, 'Louden Man' was to reveal this wonderful image once the light was in a favourable position. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Not too much remains to be seen at first of this circle, which is on top of the ridge of Louden Hill at 935 feet altitude about a kilometre to the southwest of Stannon stone circle, northwest Bodmin Moor, in Cornwall.

In fairly recent years a trackway (private vehicular access only) has been built across the moor from Middle Moor Cross to Fernacre Farm which makes both access to and finding of this circle much easier than it was. The circle is now just to the south of this track at about its highest point, and is easily seen by the one remaining standing stone.

This standing stone at the southern edge of the circle is another of these Bodmin circles’ triangular slabs pointing skywards, but in this case is leaning significantly outwards. I counted remains of 21 stones, mostly flattened or stumps in the north or south arcs, and the circle has a diameter of about 45 metres.

Got myself down here and out onto the moor again yesterday, with the intention of having a look at Roy's work. Had my old Dad with me, so wasn't sure we'd get there, and started from Stannon Circle. On the way up, at Stannon circle, we met a lady walking her dogs, who said she walks out there and goes miles nearly every day, and when I said we were heading for the other circle she thought I meant Fernacre. I said no, the one on the Louden Ridge, and she said she knew nothing of it, despite seeming very knowledgeable of most of the local moorland features. I explained where to find it, at that time remembering from my last visit, when it was very difficult to find. But I dont know how it can be missed now!

Comparing the circle now to my previous visit a decade or so ago, and have to say the circle is very clear now, whereas before there was just the one stone and 2 or 3 stumps to be seen. The clearance around the stones has done a great job, but I also think that the general level of the peat is now a good foot lower than it was back then, thus making the stumps seem like small standing stones, and uncovering many of the fallen slabs. There must be 40 stones clearly visible now. I have data on my GPS, but probably wont get round to sorting that for a while.

Such a nice afternoon, we visited Fernacre and many of the cairns out here too. Its amazing the places my 86 year old Dad gets to when he's with me on a good day!

Group work to carefully clean and re-expose stones at Louden Hill stone circle by Andy B on Sunday, 15 March 2015
(User Info | Send a Message)
Roy G writes: After gaining permissions from English Heritage, Natural England, the Landowner and the Commoners, I and two members of the TimeSeekers amateur archaeological group have been carrying out reclamation work at Louden Neolithic stone circle on the North-West of Bodmin Moor.

Like others I get about all over Bodmin Moor and was disturbed to see that unlike its nearby neighbours, Stannon and Fernacre circles, Louden was fast becoming lost to the eye with many of the ring stones sunk beneath surface level.

As some of the sunken stones were quite deep we have re-instated the removed turf from the deep ones, and reburied them due to the danger the open holes would present for stock, ponies and walkers, but at least what we really have there will now be known and officially recorded.

We found two previously unrecorded centre stones and some buried stones with interesting shapes, some of which are pictured above.

There is another midway between the centre and stone 31. You have to question why they are there because they could have been in the way of any activity that took place within the circle... unless of course they were an essential part of that activity or markers for possible alignments?

A big surprise were the regular stones we were finding just outside of the ring setting and
running parallel with it. We began to think concentric circles and got quite excited about the possibility, but that side of things will have to be left to more experienced people
to form an opinion on.

Giving an accurate measurement for the circle is difficult as it is not truly circular and
appears to be made up of nine straight sections forming a nonagon rather than being laid
out with a central peg and line to create the perfect circle. However, broadly speaking, north to south it is 45.0m x 42.5m east to west
