It was discovered by A. Rodrigues Cavaco and has been excavated with the coordination of Otávio da Veiga Ferreira in the 1950s. It was classified as IIP – Imóvel de Interesse Público (Estate of Public Interest) at the 17st of July of 1990.
About the architecture
Characterized as a false dome monument, it has a circular chamber and an oval side chamber and a straight and rectangular corridor. The circular chamber shows a plant with about 2m in diameter and consists of eight rectangular porphyry pillars, with a maximum height of 1.80m. The corridor is of average size relative to the diameter of the chamber, with approximately 2m in length. In the circular chamber was attached another structure, oval shaped, consisting of nine pillars of lower height (with about 80 cm) and separated from the other, through a small strangulation formed by three pillars. Is still visible some traces of the original mound or tumulus.
About the chronology and the location
This tholos was built around 2000 BC, with an apparent systematic use until about 1700 BC. This megalithic is situated in an area rich in ore, even today Lousal village is a miner community.
