Natural stone in Honshū
Japan is a mountainous and rocky country, so many rock outcrops can be seen here and there in this country and they have been worshiped as divine monuments or as the divinities themselves. This is one of the most eccentric examples of such natural monuments. The dimension of the capstone is 7m × 5m × 2m, weight more than 100t.
Some people believe it as an artificial dolmen, and is sometimes miss-reported as the flotsam brought to the forest of Kerobe (花露辺) hamlet, Tōni (唐丹) village in Kamaishi (釜石) city by a huge tsunami, like the stranded ship on a house brought by the 2011 tsunami. In fact, this natural stone setting stands in a mountain where wild bears live, 260m altitude, 40km away from Kerobe seashore.
An inspecting article (in Japanese) on the fabricated report of the pseudo tsunami stone.
Such kind of enormous stone settings are distributed all over Japan, often called as "Iwakura (磐座)", sometimes locals built shrines and worshiped them as the divinity or the landing points of the sacred spirits. And many people in Japan appreciate their mystery and solemnity (even some learned societies on them exist in Japan) ; some accepts them as natural outcrops, some insists it as the artificial products and some believes it as the arts made by the supernatural power.
