Destroyed Possible Standing Stones in Kent. A note I was sent today: Myself and some friends have been doing some research in Tunbridge Wells, and have found out that there were Standing Stones in Calverley Park at the end of the 60's beginning of the 70's. We have documentation from the man who was ordered to break up the stones. At present we are trying to find anyone who may have photographic evidence of these stones so we may ask the powers that be why this important site was desecrated.

We have been given the run around so far and told that there were no stones I have found at least 3 locals who remember them but no photos as yet. I wondered if anyone from this site may know anything or are interested in yet another mystery of Tunbridge Wells.

The place mentioned is The Calverley Grounds, not The Calverley Park. I lived at The Lodge, Calverley Grounds for 21 years and I understand these stones were situated to the rear of the Lodge. In all my childhood years I don''t recall seeing any standing stones apart from the sand stones that formed the rock garden to the right of the lodge. My time their was from 1948 - 1971.

The stones show on O/S maps 1/500 scale of the 1870s they also show on a photograph taken at the opening of the first band stand in the grounds the standing stones are clearly seen as two uprights and a plinth on top, above this area was a former wood henge site where items relating to the circle were based and cleared away in the early 1970s.

The site has been looked at by a Biolocation team , some Celtic tile was found in the area of the standing stones the area was recorded and published in THE SECRET OF THE STONES CHAPTER 15.

The 1808 map also shows a circle of tall trees and later the O/S micro film either 1905/1911 shows stone shark teeth sign where the stones were .

This site may be due some re development in near future as survey samples have been taken in the car park are up Mount Pleasant Avenue, perhaps there will be more of the former standing stones buried in the ground as leaf and soil litter built on the site over many 100s years , the area was a hay meadow prior to being sold to the TWBC in the 1920s, there were more ancient remains which were also removed at the time of the early Great Hall building in the form of a D shaped water pool. also shown on the early O/S map.

The fact that we have official maps of the objects and a photograph also a statement by the chap who was instructed to remove the objects does rather prove they were there but it would be nice to have a better photograph.

We do know that The alter stone which could not be broken up was taken to the council yard, now the indoor Bowling green in Tunbridge Wells where at the time of the privatization of the site the stone was taken to a local masons for re use .

It does seem very strange that an object of such archaeological interest was not photographed for official records !!, I well recall my children playing in the site and I recall my late grandmother saying " you know there is a small stone circle in the Park/grounds". We also know that there very many standing stones all over the town but have been removed over the years for one reason or another , good job the same people are not in charge of Stone Henge 6

and asking if thier listeners can help??

The Dominic King/ Pat Marsh shows could be worth a try espcially as the location is just behind the BBC STUDIO

To clarify, the site was located in Calverley Grounds, not Calverley Park. Calverley Park is a separate, private park found to the NW of Calverley Grounds.
