Lincoln was a legionary fortress built by the Romans around 50 AD, Lincoln's Roman name was Lindum Colonia. Lin(dum) comes from an old word for "pool" and "Colonia" referred to a town for retired roman soldiers, Lincoln was the mid climate retirement colonia from the three colonia old soldiers could choose from - the two others were in warmer and colder places.

The Bronze and Iron age finds all around the city show that settlement in Lincoln goes back well before the arrival of the Romans though. Downhill the prehistoric people lived around (the then tidal) Brayford Pool (The Lin in Lincoln) and uphill it's always been presumed that the Roman fort was built on an existing Bronze/Iron age fort because of it hilltop position and prehistoric finds.
