Stone Circle in Angus. Balgarthno Stone Circle is a scheduled ancient monument, and measures 6.1m in diameter. The scheduled area has recently been extended to 40 meters around the site.
These are my local stones, being less than half a mile from where I live. Lying in public ground just to the west of Myrekirk Road, the circle is easily accessible. There have been persistant rumours of supermarket planning permission for the adjacent field.
Note: Open up to Myrekirk an 'after school' family event: see the completed community space at
Balgarthno Stones Site, 16th June. Short notice post but good that it's getting some attention.

Balgarthno submitted by hamish A nice "roundy stane" in the midst of the jumble.
Balgarthno submitted by hamish It is difficult to get an idea of the former shape of this site. The fence is necessery but frustrating.

Balgarthno submitted by hamish This is as close as you can get, these are fine stones, it is a shame that more are not raised.

It's good to see the site still being used for ritualistic and cultural purposes after 5000 odd years. i.e. the kids fooball match, and evidence of the local tribe seeking altered states of consciousness.

Re: Balgarthno (Score: 1) by cosmic on Wednesday, 19 November 2003 (User Info | Send a Message) | Althought it is scheduled there did not appear to be an sign regarding this or an information board when I visited. The single stone left standing appeared to have been used as the base for a boefire and there was also broken glass around.
Such are the penalties of actually being within the City boundary and only yards away from the Kingsway (Dundee ring road).
According to a Stone Pages in 1998-9 this site as under threat from a development by ASDA by nothing seems to have happened yet. | [ Reply to This ]

This is yet again being threatened by Dundee Council - who have passed planning permission for another supermarket round the site (which will destroy play areas & green park spaces too)
They have had to go to Scottish Executive for final permissions - hopefully, not too late to save it.
Is this allowed to happen to scheduled monuments? | [ Reply to This ]

Re: Balgarthno (Score: 1) by Nick on Monday, 16 February 2004 (User Info | Send a Message) | I have just returned from the Planning Offices in Dundee. The site isn't going to be touched. If you have a look at the map link, the circle's just west of Myrekirk Road (arrowed). The new development is going to be built south of South Road, with a new entrance off the roundabout at the southern end of Myrekirk Road. This roundabout will require to be widened a little, but going by the plans the houses either side of this end of Myrekirk Rd aren't going to be touched, so there is no danger to the circle.

Hope this clears things up,

Re: Balgarthno (Score: 1) by MatTheCat on Monday, 07 June 2004 (User Info | Send a Message) | | Good to hear that the circle next to the footie pitches aint going to get touched. But does anyone who has visited this circle think it is a particularly great one. I have checked it out a few times and it just seems like a neutral piece of land to me. i.e. nothing special about the place except that there are a few large boulders lying in a circular fashion. I wonder if any Earth Mysteries enthusiast or leyline detector person considers that this circle was perhaps used for more pragmatic purposes than religious. | [ Reply to This ]

Works to preserve monument completed (Score: 0) by Anonymous on Wednesday, 21 June 2006 | Councillor Charles Farquhar visited Balgarthno Stone Circle in Dundee today along with representatives of Historic Scotland and Scottish Urban Archaeological Trust, following preservation work carried out on the monument.
Along with an interpretation panel, new fencing has been erected around the prehistoric stone circle in Myrekirk Park, Charleston, to protect it from persistent vandalism.
The work was made possible thanks to grant-aided funds from Historic Scotland.
City council leisure and communities staff also went along to the site with Mr Farquhar, who is leisure services convener.
“The presence of this monument shows that this area, now known as Charleston, has held a special significance for many generations of people,” he said.
“The decision to put a fence around the stone circle was not taken lightly, but it was felt that the significance of the stone circle needed to be highlighted and the stones themselves protected.
“We would like to thank Historic Scotland for their assistance with this project. Now that local citizens are aware of the age of the history of the stone circle, it is hoped they will feel a sense of ownership towards it and educate other people about it and serve as its guardians.”
Historic Scotland inspector of ancient monuments, Allan Rutherford said they were happy to work together with Dundee City Council to preserve this important monument.

Re: Balgarthno (Score: 1) by crowfoot on Sunday, 29 July 2007 (User Info | Send a Message) | Balgarthno has now been tidied up and fenced off by Dundee City Council, there is still evidence of locals using it for bonfires etc. Some of the locals refer to the circle as the "Devil's Stones" Tho' this may be just parents telling ghost stories to thier kids. The circle is known locally as the " Myre Kirk" roughly translated as "Marsh Church".
Access now seems to be restricted although the fence is not that high and is probably an attempt as a deterrant rather than actually preventing direct access to the stones. There are also some cup and ring marks on one of the fallen stones.
