This extensive barrow cemetery is the largest iron age cemetery in Møre og Romsdal region. It consists of over 200 burials. The cemetery have been in use for several centuries from early iron age to later iron age.
The site consists of about 150 round barrow mounds, they vary in size from 25 metres down to 4 metres across and from 1 to 2 metres in height. Some of them have been plundered in later years. They do not rise much from the terrain and appear lower than in many other sites.
More, the site has also several long barrows, ranging in size from about 10 to 20 metres in lenght and from 2-4 metres wide and from 0,5 to 1 metres in height.
In the middle of the cemetery is a star-shaped burial mound, the "arms" are about 6-7 metres long from the centre.
There are also some triangle-shaped mounds, they can be hard to find as they dont elevate much from the terrain. Triangle-shaped mounds are not very common from this period. Some flat-ground burials have also been found.
Some of the round barrows have a single ring of stones around the bases, and in the south part of the cemetery is a area with several graves marked with a ring of stone. They are smaller, about 2-3 metres across.
Some of the mounds have been excavated, and some have shown burned bones while others had unburned human remains. In one of the large mounds, 5 separate burials from different time periods with a total of 7 human skeletons was found, suggesting the mound have been "reused" after the original burial.
The cemetery is located on a flat surface between the main highway and the river to the south. The site is inside a beautiful leaf-tree forest with spread trees and short ground vegetation, making the mounds easy to see and photograph.
The site have been made easy for visitors to see and explore, and a visit here is highly recommendable.
