Standing Stones in Telemark. The Skafsås church has two standing stones, one of them laying into the wall surrounding the churchyard and one standing just outside.
The stone standing outside the churchyard is around 1,3 metres in height, around 40cm wide at the base and around 10cm thick. It has a hole drilled trough it and have been used as a "gapestokk" or pillar for chaining up criminals people in public view for shaming in the medieval to late 1800s when this form of punishment was normal but the stone itself is said to be from a iron age cemetery located here before the church was built. The stone is 1 metre away from the stone wall and next to the entrance.
The stone laying down inside the churchyard stone wall is around 4-5 metres long and about 1 metre wide. It has a rectangular cross section and is also said to have been from a earlier barrow cemetery.
There is also a "steinmerr" or stone horse inside the church wall. The stone is also said to have been a medieval punishment tool tho it is not known if this also is the remains of an earlier standing stone.
Inside the church is the Skafsås runestone. It was found here during the 1700s and was for decades located standing inside the churchyard but today the stone is inside the church itself to protect it from the elements. The church was closed when I visited, I hopefully will return with a article about the runestone.
