Runestone in Telemark
On a open field just south of the road to Fyresdal is a runestone. It is a pretty square block of stone with smooth sides. It is around 190cm in height, around 45X40cm wide. On the north side in the east corner there was a runic inscription with 10 signs, however it is not possible to see today, the runic letters have sadly eroded away.
The stone was originally located at the entrance of the church of the lake Nesvatn. One can still see the ruins of the church. The stone was also in use as a pillory stone and used for punishment, usually a pole with an iron hoop where the offender was chained with the instrument around the neck and displayed in a public place, mostly outside a town hall or a church. The stone was moved to its current location when the old church was torn down.
At the original site of the stone (the site today) was found an Iron Age burial with some bones and an axe and a spear tip. Just next to the stone was a large barrow mound and some smaller round barrows, these have sadly been removed.
