Cairn in Møre og Romsdal
The Håkonrøysa cairn is the largest burial cairn known in Møre og Romsdal county. It is located close to the sea on a tip of land going south into the Kværnesfjord. The view over the ocean is beautiful from here though some trees are blocking it, and the cairn would have been easily visible from the sea.
King Håkon the good is said to be buried in this cairn, that's why the name Håkonrøysa, however this is impossible to prove. The cairn is not far up from the sea level and has been dated to the iron age, around 700-800AD. The typical bronze age burial cairns are usually higher up from sea level.
The cairn is around 35 metres in diameter and around 1,5 metres in height. It has probably been much higher but the cairn has a huge crater on top and a lot of stones have been thrown to the side.
A story from the 1800s tell about a huge gold treasure buried in the cairn and some local farmers were trying to dig it up. While they were digging they saw their farmhouses on fire but when they ran there it was not a fire. After this they left the cairn. Similar stories like this is also known from other barrows and ancient burial cemeteries in Norway.
To get to the cairn visitors have to drive to the end of the country road and then walk a footpath for around 800 metres.
