Novaesium
Novaesium submitted by Harald_Platta : The Jupitersäule ("Jupiter stele" is located near the former entrance of the Roman castrum Novaesium, which would finally become today`s Neuss (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). The base shows representations of Hercules, Ceres, Mercury and Vulcanus, while the pillar shows the images of Juno, Minerva and Mercury. Jupiters sits on top of the stele. The original (3rd century) can be seen i... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Novaesium was founded as a Roman castrum at the Lower Germanic Limes and then became the basis for one of the oldest cities in Germany. Today, the city is called Neuss (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany), and competes with the city of Trier for the title of the oldest city in Germany.

It is very likely that a settlement of the Celts or of a Germanic tribe existed at this site first. The Roman castrum was built in the year 16 BC. However, it is not known, when the settlement next to the castrum, which became today`s Neuss, was founded.
The location of the castrum/settlement at the Rhine river was chosen based on strategical aspects, as it was close to the river mouths of the Ruhr, Erft, Wupper and Düssel. Roman soldiers were present in Neuss until the 4th or 5th century.

Today, several remains of the Roman and Medieval time can be seen in the city. Several finds are exhibited in the Clemens Sels Museum.
However, while relatively much of the Medieval city wall is still present, only little of the former Roman city and castrum can be seen above ground. Only a signposted historical tour with copies of large Roman artefacts and various information boards, as well as the in situ preserved and protected building of a Roman place of worship (the Fossa Sanguinis) refer to the ancient Novaesium.

Novaesium
Novaesium submitted by Creative Commons : The tombstone of Oclatius is located near the former Roman castrum Novaesium, which would finally become today`s Neuss (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). Oclatius served as a signifer (standard bearer) in the Ala Afrorum, an equestrian unit, which was probably stationed in Neuss in the late 1rst century. Oclatius, who is depicted in the upper relief with the standard of his unit, was from the... (Vote or comment on this photo)
