The small cellar exhibits two opposite stairs and is thought to have been used as a baptismal font for the Taurobolium, the bull-blood-based baptism of the Kybele cult. The interpretation was based on, among other things, the description of the ritual by the Roman poet Prudentius.
In addition, small votive figures were found that have been interpreted not as the representation of Kybele but as local Germanic mother deities, perhaps Sunuxal.
Kybele ("Cybele") was an Anatolian mother goddess, which was possibly venerated already in the Neolithic. Later, the cult was spread in Greece, Thracia and, similar to the Mithras cult, the Roman Imperium. Therefore, it is interesting to assume that the site in Neuss was a place where the Romanized version of Kybele was venerated next to Romanized versions of Germanic deities.
It has to be noted that the interpretation of the site is under debate. Some scientists see it as just an ancient cellar.
Today, the site is conserved beneath the pavilion Fossa Sanguinis and can be visited.
