The five stones were originally standing on a large three-pointed star-shaped burial cairn. One stone was standing in each corner and the two tallest in the centre of the cairn. The cairn was very low, only about 0.5 metres tall and it can be called more a stone setting than a cairn. The sides on the star-shaped cairn were around 20 metres in length, so the stones in the corners are 20 metres away from each other. The two tallest stones are in the centre, they are 5 and 4.5 metres in height and around 30cm wide, they have smooth edges. The corner stones are 3.5m, 3m and 2 metres tall and the same thickness as the centre stones. Today the stone cairn is no longer visible, it has been lost to agriculture in later years, however the stones have remained.
In 1901 there was found a shallow grave between the two centre stones. In the grave was found a bronze kettle. The kettle contained the burned bones of a middle-aged man together with 5 bear claws. The burial was dated to around 300BC.
The name comes from a traditional tale of Saint Olaf. He was sailing through the sound and there were five young women standing on the shore, asking him to come ashore to entertain them, but he said they could stand there and wait for him to return, and then they all turned to stone.
The site today has been marked with information posts and a parking lot has been built just west of the stones. The grass between the stones are regularly cut short to make the site easy to visit for tourists.
