BruteNorse visited on 5th Feb 2018 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 2 Access: 5 One of Norway's grand Viking Era ship burials, but sadly neglected and overgrown.
Close by the road going north-south is a large round barrow. It is called "Grønhaug" (the green mound.) The mound is 30 metres in diameter and around 4 metres in height. It was excavated in 1903. The barrow is probably from the same age as the ship grave at Storhaug to the north-east. It has been dated to around 700AD.
The mound was buildt of over a inner core of stone. Inside the stone it was a deep ditch and inside the ditch was a large boat. The grave had already been plundered in ancient times. Grave robbers had digged a hole into the boat and the burial chamber from north-west. Only some few remains of the grave goods was preserved.
Inside the chamber was found pieces of fabric, collections of feathers, pieces of wood buckets and wood plates and pieces of glass. Originally the burial chamber have probably contained much more grave goods.
The boat was 15 metres long, 3 metres wide and had eight pair of oars. It was in a bad shape and only pieces of it remained.
The mond was restored in later years, and it today possible to see in its original shape.
The island of Karmøy has some very large burial mounds with a wealthy grave goods, and the island were probably a power centre in the iron age.
