Rock Art in Troms
The rock art site at Skavberget consists of three groups of figures. Only one of the panels have been made able to viist while the other two groups inside the farm itself have been permanently covered up, however the kulturminnesøk site have a very good description of the site and panels. The carvings are the classic hunter-gatherer type and have been dated back to 3000-2000 BCE.
Panel 3 that is possible to visit consists of 17 smaller figures of elk, fish, seals, reindeer and some geometrical figures. The carvings are not very deep but wide and have been painted up with white paint. They are all foud on a vertical south-facing rock side. Here are also information posters and a parking lot. This panel is regularly been treated with etanol to keep moss growth away.
Panel 1 and 2 inside the farm area are not possible to visit. They are also undergoing treatment and possible will be made avialable to visit. They consists of a total of 15 figures, it has a very fascinating collection of figures containing animal heads, human figures, bears and elsk. Two human figures are holding something that looks like a tennis racket tho its probably a music instrument or maybe fishing equipment? Another very larg human figure in real size picture a headless human with two large phalluses seen in relief from two sides. The elk head is large and most of the other animal figures are small. There are some geometrical figures as well.
