A public museum in Stockholm, launched in 1926 with the Swedish archaeologist Johan Gunnar Andersson as founding director. The museum was originally based mainly on Andersson's groundbreaking discoveries in China, during the 1920s, of a previously unknown East Asian prehistory.

The museum today has wide-ranging collections and exhibits of Asian archeology, classical arts, and culture, and a large Asia research library open to the public.

China before China exhibition

People have lived in East Asia for thousands of years, long before written history and the empire of the Middle Kingdom. The China before China exhibition tells us about how people were living and creating in East Asia for thousands of years before the rise of the Middle Kingdom.

The Middle Kingdom – Imperial China

Experience China through 3,500 years of arts and crafts. The exhibition begins with the Bronze Age and finishes with the last Qing Dynasty in the early 1900's. Discover the fascinating history of contemporary China and the relationship between Sweden and China throughout history.

It's assumed to be ceremonial (or used for the burial) because the plates are slate, which would shatter in a real battle. The documentation described that this might be for protection from ghosts, spirits, or other magical threats. Image copyright: tiny red warrior, hosted on Flickr and di...
