Among all Björkö grave-fields Hemlanden ("The Homelands") is the largest one, consisting of approximately 1600 ancient monuments closely grouped on area of 650 x 400 m. There are about 1500 graves under barrows, 30 with stone circles, 50 burials with tricorn stone settings, 10 with rectangular stone setting and 5 marked with stones in the shape of ships.
Most of mounds are 5-9 m in diameter and 0.4-1m high, however barrows up to 20 m in diameter and 2.5 m high are not uncommon. Stone circles are 3-6 m in diameter and mostly built from small stones 0.2-0.3 m high. All tree-cornered stone settings have sides of 5-7 m, except one that has sides of 20m and made of 0.7 m high stones. Stone ships reach 15 m in length.
Alexander Seton, a Scottish amateur, was the first to excavate 13 graves at Hemlanden cemetery in 1825-27. About 700 graves were then investigated in 1873-95 by Hjalmar Stolpe. In 1932 three more burials were explored by Holger Arbman.
The majority of burials were pagan, cremations and inhumations, many with rich grave-goods: food, cloth, jewelry and equipment.
