Stone Circle in Buskerud
This site with several stone circles have just recently been discovered by a wood worker who accidentally stumbled upon the stone rings while cutting wood. Nobody knew of the stone circles until a few years ago, and the stone rings are still overgrown with some vegetation while the bigger trees have been cut down to expose the circles. The site is on a small forest covered hill with view over the surrounding valley and countryside.
Some local myths and stories surround this place:
In the past it was believed that this was an ancient sacrificial site or ritualistic site, as it supposedly happened strange things there. A large and rather flat stone has been called the "altar" for several years. Many were convinced that they had seen both ghosts and even the devil himself there in broad daylight! A legend says that a monastery would be built on the site. The project had to be abandoned because trolls and ghosts removed building materials as they ran forward!
While the stone called the "Altar" have been known for many years, the stone circles was discovered just a few years ago.
The stone boulder called the altar is around 2.2 metres long, 1.3 metres wide and around 1 metre in height. It is found in the middle of the site.
The stone rings are hard to see because of the vegetation, but they are said to be from 15 to 20 metres in diameter and made of smaller boulders, around 30-40cm wide. They are very similar with the stone circles at Egge in Trøndelag. The stone circles in Trøndelag is found to be from the Iron Age, around 600BC.
