Hillfort in Vestfold
Visitors to this hillfort should bring bugspray or insect repellant. The hillfort is located between two small lakes with swamps all around and I think I attracted everything with a pair of wings and six legs!
On the narrow ridge between the two lakes lies a hillfort. The top plateau is uneven with many small cracks and ledges. Towards the east, the terrain falls steeply towards Holmsvannet. In the north the ridge narrows to an easily climbable tang and from here, along the ridge, a path now goes up to the castle. When I visited the hillfort the path had been so overgrown it was not possible to follow.
Towards the west the terrain slopes in ledges until it drops off steeply towards Bruddsteinsur and Korsvannet. Towards the south the ridge flattens out and passes into extensive forest terrain. Towards this side there is a wall of sharp-edged quarry stone. Farther east, the wall extends all the way to the steep mountain side. The main path into the castle area passes the wall here, but there is no clear trace of a gate. From the cliff and in a west direction, the wall runs about 35m before it turns in a north direction along the rock shelf towards the west. About 10m north of the turn, the wall is broken by a narrow rock cairn running North East-South South West. Along this it is possible to come from the bottom of the valley. However I got lost trying to get down from the fort and I had to climb down some very steep rock outcrops.
It is impossible to detect any entrance at this location. From here, the wall runs straight North-South with some minor breaks in smooth bedrock and ends at the end of a steep westly turned rock hammer. On part of the stretch, especially where it turns NW-SE, fine dry masonry, but otherwise the wall was like an elongated pile of stones 1-4m wide and 0.5-3m high. No trace of a water source. Somewhat surprising that there is no entrenchment to the north.
