Anta das Pedras Grandes is located in Caneças and was presented to the scientific community by archaeologist Carlos Ribeiro in 1880. It remains classified as a national monument since 1944. It was built in final Neolithic period (between 4500 and 2000 BC). Originally it would have been a dolmen of polygonal chamber apparently composed of eight struts and a short corridor (a standing pillar on each side). The base of the foothills of the monument consist of blocks of average size (limestone and basalt) and there is possible traces of the structure of the tumulus in the land with predominantly clayey characteristics. Regarding the area surrounding the monument it was identified a cut area (wide dispersion of materials in flint - chips and cut debris).
In 2001 the town of Odivelas promoted archaeological studies to evaluate the potential of the asset of the burial chamber. Thanks to this work it was found that the camera of the monument is relatively preserved associated with a small hallway facing south-west. Also the remains of the mound and the foothills of the standing pillars of the camera were found.
In the present territory of the county of Odivelas several archaeological sites have been detected over the years including several megalithic dolmen type of funerary monuments. The dolmens in this territory were identified mainly in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Unfortunately the dolmens of Trigache and Batalha were destroyed by evolution and urbanization. The Anta das Pedras Grandes is the only one that's left in this territory.
