Museum in Vila Real

The Museu da Vila Velha (Vila Velha Museum) is the corollary of the archaeological campaigns carried out in recent years in the Vila Velha area of the city of Vila Real. It is intended that these same works continue, thus contributing to an accumulation of information and collections in the museum, while at the same time increasing the number of archaeological areas that can be visited, in addition to those that already exist - the Portas da Vila structure and vestiges of urban fabric in Rua de S. Dinis.

The main exhibition is a first approach to the occupation of the territory of Vila Velha, recognized by the general population of Vila Real as the place where the village, nowadays the city, was born. A first approach, since only a tiny part of the results of the archaeological excavations carried out are shown. One of the functions of this museum is to show to the public the various phases of the work that the archaeological estate requires, not only through its display in the exhibitions, but also through the access that the visit allows to the work areas.

At first, it intends to evoke the process of founding Vila Real and the transformations carried out in the old territory of Panóias. The status of the ancient territory of Panóias, which Vila Real guaranteed, is symbolically represented by the "Portas da Vila", the main entrance to the intramural zone, with only three pieces remaining today, and "Marco da Redonda", the name by which the granite landmarks that marked the outskirts of Vila Real were known, as mentioned in the D. Dinis charter.

After this first moment, the visitor enters an area of more direct contact with the archaeological elements, through five distinct nuclei. The first is related to the recognition of the archaeological value of Vila Velha - scope, nature and extent of the archaeological interventions carried out by IPPAR (1996) and by the recent Polis Vila Real Program. Another exhibition center focuses on the perception of Vila Velha as a medieval urban structure, in its most characteristic elements, be it the urban wall, the doors or the vestiges of the old urbanism. A third center is dedicated to the perception of Vila Velha as a dynamic space, ending a long history, where vestiges and heritage values from different periods overlap, from recent Prehistory to the Contemporary Era. Prehistoric and Protohistoric occupation is the theme for another nucleus. The daily life of the communities that inhabited this territory is perceived through a set of lithic instruments, ceramic pieces and objects of adornment and prestige, representing social status or activities such as spinning, weaving or milling cereals.
