The Museu de Arqueologia e Numismática de Vila Real (Vila Real Museum of Archeology and Numismatics) in Portugal is a regional museum primarily dedicated to archaeology and coins, but also has an art collection. The Museum is a starting point for knowledge and interpretation of the region in which it operates, a region that is very rich in heritage and with an already long tradition in the field of archaeological research
The numismatics collection of the museum is composed of about 35.000 coins, of which almost 5.000 are exhibited in the Permanent Numismatic Exhibition, being marked between the 5th century BC and the 8th century AD. The vast majority are dated to the time of the Roman Empire, although there are Greek, Carthaginian, Spanish-Roman, Portuguese-Roman, Byzantine, Visigoth and Arab numismas. Almost all coins were found in the Province of Trás-os-Montes.
The archaeology collection, which displays a considerable set of archaeological objects, collected over thirty years by João Parente in the districts of Vila Real and Bragança, is divided into Megalithism, the transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age, the occupation of the Trás-os-Montes territory in the Iron Age and the Roman Empire.
Among the exhibits that can be seen there are parts of the collection from the explorations made by the priests Brenha and Rodrigues in the dolmens of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, in the late XIX century, two sets of polished stone axes, a vase and a flint blade from the Anta da Estante (Alijó) and the menhir statue of Vilarinho da Samardã, deposited in the Museum by Mr. David Cowell, the “Pedra Formosa de Ribalonga”, classified as a public interest asset, among many others.
The objects are accompanied, whenever necessary, by models, photography, cartography or drawings, for a better understanding of the exhibition .
