Hillfort in Cumbria
The earth work remains of a naturally defended Iron-Age slight univallate Hillfort measuring 46m x 22m situated on Castle Crag (396m) overlooking Haweswater Reservoir.
Castle Crag is a natural headland, precipitous to cliffs on 3 sides and on the 4th SW side defended by 2 separate deep rock-cut ditches and a great earthen rampart of stones. The earthen rampart is 5m high from the floor of the inner ditch to the piled stones on the summit of the fort. The inner ditch is 4m wide, 2m deep and is separated from the outer rock cut ditch (10m wide, 3m deep) by a rocky knoll. Outside the outer ditch is a rectangular artificially levelled area measuring c19m by 15m which enhances a terrace in the adjacent hillside.
The entrance to the fort is on the SW, up a ledge of rock and easily defensible. Excavations in 1922 found floors of level clay with charcoal trodden inside the rampart, but no pottery or building remains.
