Los Millares
Los Millares submitted by thecaptain : Los Millares site is large, spectacular and very well maintained with some reconstructions for instructive purposes (Vote or comment on this photo)
Chalcolithic settlement where earliest metal (copper) production in western Europe is documented. Calibrated C14 dating gave ages between 3090 BCE and 2285 BCE. Also a site of tholos (beehive) graves. Was it a local development or a colony of the Minoans? The debate continues...

The site is large, spectacular and very well maintained with some reconstructions for instructive purposes (children!). Very worthwhile visit in wild landscape.

The actual site is about 1 km from the road and the visitor centre. Handicapped persons may drive in. Wear comfortable shoes and take along sufficient water in summer!

Visits: Wednesdays till Sundays 10-14h. Afternoons: check with the visitor centre! Tel 677 903 404

Los Millares – the biggest town in Europe – 3000 BC style by Andy B on Thursday, 01 November 2012
(User Info | Send a Message)
Gerry Palmer writes: Los Millares is huge – the largest known European fortified copper-age town /settlement – it not only covers 5 acres of a plateau behind three concentric lines of stone defences but it also included thirteen outlying forts on nearby hilltops – presumably for defence.

The site is old, it was inhabited for nearly a thousand years (3200 – 2250 BC), yet was abandoned just 250 years after the Pyramids were built in ancient Egypt!

Near Almeria on the southern coast of Spain, the area is well worth a visit (it is not too far from the Alhambra and stunning Arab castles and remains). Walking around the site it is easy to spot 5,000 year old pottery shards and marked stones which abound across the site.
