Anne T visited on 13th Oct 2022 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Penrith Museum: With relatively few trains running between Penrith and Carlisle, and recovering from a broken shoulder, this was of necessity a brief, but reasonably interesting visit. Only a relatively small museum, it has a surprising number of exhibits, although not displayed in any cohesive way, and with frustratingly little information about the items on display. However, I was made very welcome by the staff (volunteer?) members manning the reception desk. I asked permission to take photographs of some of the exhibits, particularly the cross base, and this was readily granted, providing I didn't use flash. I would go back for another look next time I'm in Penrith, feeling better, and able to carry my proper camera with me, rather than using my mobile phone. Am planning on going back in the not too distant future.

Penrith Museum submitted by Anne T : The Norse cross base, tucked away in a small corner of the museum by their display of rock art stones. A sign just describes it as 'Norse' and gives details of how these cross bases would have been used. I hadn't expected to see this here, so for someone who searches for these cross bases, it was a treat to see it. Museum staff (volunteers?) were unable to help me with more details on the day, s... The Penrith Museum and Tourist Information Centre, are housed in the former Robinson's School, an Elizabethan building which was used as a school until the early 1970's. The building is an ideal starting point for those wishing to explore thi Cumbrian town. Penrith Museum submitted by Anne T : Tucked away in a corner, this is described as a Norse cross base. It's location made it a little challenging to photograph properly. This photo looks down into the socket which would have held the shaft. Made of local sandstone, I've emailed the museum to ask if they have details of its original find spot. I visited the museum last week and saw the exhibition Stone Circles Landscape Art. What a load of pretentious tosh that was. One exhibit was a photo montage of stone circles, mostly Castlerigg, and that was quite good, but the rest fell way off the mark for me. A stack of document boxes and a footstool, lumps of rock with coloured chalk marks on them etc. They were supposed to be inspired by the landscape but to me they were an insult to the skills of those who had made the other exhibits many thousands of years previously - like the axes from the axe factory. Thankfully I didn't have to pay to see it.

This will be very interesting to see how it evolves. The Eden Valley mounments are so fantastic, I've often wondered at the lack of a touristy place to draw all the knowledge together.

£24k Grant to Bring Eden's Neolithic Heritage to Life by Anonymous on Thursday, 15 December 2005
Eden District Council's Penrith Museum is celebrating news that they have been awarded over £24,000 from the Local Heritage Initiative, a scheme run by the Countryside Agency on behalf of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Nationwide Building Society.

The funding will allow the Museum to run a series of events during 2006 aimed at broadening awareness of, and accessibility to, prehistoric heritage in the Vale of Eden. This area is a major focus for Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments, including stone circles, henges, burial cairns and rock art sites.

The project aims to forge new interest in these monuments that have survived for over four thousand years, and which can still be seen so dramatically across the varied landscapes of the Vale of Eden.

Working with local communities is an important part of the project and 'Living Among the Monuments' will facilitate a unique opportunity for local people to interact with their prehistoric heritage. There will be a season of educational events and experiences centred on an interpretive exhibition that will run from 14 April - 31 October 2006.

In addition the Museum will organise a major field-walking survey, publish the results and hold two 'finds' workshops to facilitate access to any finds.

A series of three public lectures will provide an opportunity for local people to hear speakers who have specific archaeological research interests in the Vale of Eden. There will be guided walks to key prehistoric sites and a free informative booklet providing an overview of heritage information and places to visit.
