Mayburgh submitted by TerryStaniforth

Henge in Cumbria. Located within earshot of the M6, this massive henge consists of a huge bank 110m in diameter composed of grey, water worn stones brought up from a nearby river and a single standing stone. It has one entrance to the east in the direction of King Arthur’s Round Table.

According to antiquarians, 4 stones originally stood in the centre (a possible Four Poster stone circle according to Burl) and 4 others flanked the entrances. These were destroyed in 1720.

Access: The henge is 400m to the west of the A6, the Round Table is at the south west of the junction of the A6 with the A592.

Note: A visit to Two Cumbrian Henges, here and King Arthur's Round Table, Saturday 21st July 2007. See comment.

Mayburgh, Cumbria My poor old digi cam is on its way out, too much light or not enough & the images need heavily Photoshopping. I do like its total misrepresentation of Mayburgh on a slightly dull day though.

Mayburgh Standing Stone, 22nd June 2005The last rays of solstice sun catch the standing stone in the centre of the henge, throwing the shadow over to the top of the oposite bank. This is quite possibly the most atmospheric megalithic site in Cumbria.
