The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area’s main feature is Hells Canyon, known as the deepest canyon in North America. It is 7,993 feet deep from the mountain peaks of the Seven Devils to the Snake River, and 10 miles from rim to rim. The Snake River, Hells Canyon Wilderness, Seven Devils Mountains, and Imnaha and Rapid Rivers are other significant features.
The area’s magnificent rugged-landscape is rich in cultural sites (American Indian and early settlement), geology (uplands, benchlands, canyonlands, and mountains), native plants, and fish and wildlife species. The Wild and Scenic Snake and Imnaha Rivers, many miles of trails, limited road access, and distant landing strips facilitate access to users, while preserving the remote characteristics of the HCNRA. Besides impressive scenery, the area offers opportunities for fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, picnicking, rafting, boating, wildlife watching, cultural site exploring, and other outdoor recreation activities. Viewpoints, campgrounds, picnic areas, boat launch facilities, and interpretive sites provide amenities for visitors recreating in this fascinating and rugged landscape.
Advisory: Most of the trails Hells Canyon are in rattlesnake and poison ivy country! Water on the trail is scarce and unsafe to drink if not previously treated.
