Stinkingwater Medicine Wheels
Stinkingwater Medicine Wheels submitted by bat400_photo : University of Oregon launches a helium filled blimp to photo document one of two rare medicine wheels in the Stinkingwater Mountains, Oregon. Photo reproduced from KVAL.com news website, Eugene Oregon, 2012, in accordance with their terms and conditions. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The two stone circles lie on Bureau of Land Management property within the Stinkingwater Mountains. They were discovered and documented in 2007. The stone circle shown in local media appears to be approximately 20m in diameter and made from dozens of stones, ranging from fist sized rocks to stones half a meter long. Stone circles of similar type are known from the the northern plains and eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, but are basically unknown in this area.

Patrick O'Grady (University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History) estimates the structures to be between 110 and 340 years old based on lichen growth, wear, and appearance of the ground beneath the stones that make up the circles. At this estimated age the circles are may predate the first contact in this area with Europeans. In the contact era and later the Stinkingwater Mountain area was an important gathering area of the Northern Paiute for the harvest of wild root crops.
The location given is for the general area; not the stone circles.

Efforts to document the first Native American Medicine Wheels ever reported in Oregon - led by Patrick O'Grady of the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History - were featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting's "Oregon Field Guide" television program (Feb. 23, 2012)

O'Grady, an archaeologist with the UO archaeology field school, has been using aerial photography to document the medicine wheels, which are large circular stone formations, sometimes with spokes radiating from the center.

Read more at KVAL and see the video segment at Oregon Public Broadcasting.

See also the Stanford solar centre and the Megalithic Portal page on the best known of such sites (in the United States), the Bighorn Medicine Wheel.
