Cave or Rock Shelter in Yorkshire (North)

This cave shelter was used by local saint, Robert of Knaresborough. He was a 13th saint who did not like the local monasteries and decided to live a more ascetic life. He was even visited by King John who gave him lands. More can be read at St Robert's Cave, Knaresborough website.

This cave, chapel and inner room are also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 53215. Whilst Pastscape says these features of of uncertain date, they are believedto date from c1180 when Robert of Knaresborough first occupied the cave. The cave has been hollowed out of a limestone cave on the northern bank of the River Nidd.

Historic England has a couple of list entries for the cave and chapel. See List ID 1149914 (Saint Robert's Cave, also called Saint Robert's Chapel, approximately 120 metres south west of Grimbald Bridge), and List ID 1015540 (St Robert's Cave medieval hermitage, 90m north of Plumpton Mill Farm), saying this is a rare survival of a medieval hermitage which also includes the chapel and living area - "the monument as a whole is unique".

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for St Robert’s Cave-Chapel And Holy Well, Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, which includes a photograph, a drawing, directions for finding this site, background information and a list of reference sources for more information. The Jornal adds: "About ½ a mile to the west, at the other end of Abbey Road, is the medieval chapel of ‘Our-Lady-of-the Crag’, which has sometimes mistakenly been called St Robert’s Chapel, but this folly-like structure was built 200 years after the saint".

It stands close to St Robert's Cave by Grimhall Bridge where the saint lived as a hermit in the 12th century. The chapel acted as a wayside shrine. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

St Robert's cave
St Robert's cave submitted by Sunny100 : A drawing/illustration of The early 15th century 'Chapel of our Lady of the Crag' on Abbey Road, Knaresborough - a wayside shrine en-route to St Robert's Priory. St Robert of Knaresborough lived as a hermit close by in a cave at Grimhall Bridge. He died in 1218 and his tomb is inside the chapel. The lifesize statue is that of a crusader knight, and probably not St Robert. (Vote or comment on this photo)
