Round Barrows in Rogaland

To the west of The great mound are two large round barrows. They are called Kjørkhaug (The church mound) because people used to rest at this spot when going to church on sundays. The other is called Klubbhaug. The smaller Klubbhaug has been erased in later years and is no longer visible. Kjørkhaug have been restored and is possible to see in its original state. The mound is around 30 metres in diameter and around 4 metres in height.

Kjørkhaug mound is one of the strangest of the large burial mounds on Karmøya island. When it was excavated no grave was found. Inside the mound wa found seven small round stone cairns. A theory is that the mound was a cenotaph, a memorial mound erected to seven people who died far away from their homestead. At the edge of the mound however, it was found a spiral-shaped ring of gold and a bronze dagger. These object could however, have been from a secondary burial.

The barrow to the north of Kjørkhaug is called Klubbhaug. When excavated, the mound had a smaller stone core which concealed a carefully sealed burial chamber which was 1,8m long. In the stone coffin there were a skeleton together with a 26cm long bronze dagger, a knife of bronze, a buckle of bronze, and bronze button and a pair of tweezers. The mound was 25 metres in diameter and around 4 metres in height.
