Kirkmichael parish was an area that was described by George Chalmers (1887) as possessing “a vast body of Druid remains,” there being “a number of Druid cairns in the vicinity of Druidical circles.” As we know, the term ‘druid’ has long fallen out of favour; and with it in this area, the sites themselves have taken a similar fate.

Found just south of the village, on raised ground 100 yards west of the river, this stone circle is not listed in any of the archaeological catalogues, but its existence was thankfully recorded in one of the essays by regional historian Charles Fergusson. (1899)

TNA has this site about 250m to the south of TMP - 56.7212132295361, -3.50356444969908 grid ref NO 0808 5985 which fits with the description by Charles Fergusson so probably worth moving even though there is nothing remaining today :-(

I am intrigued as to how one can measure the position of a non existant place to accuracy of a thousandth of a micron (millionth part of a millimetre) !!!! Or indeed anything !! ;-)

You are correct - I simply took the recorded original location grid ref (blieved to be reasonably accurate) and put it into a lat/long convertor. The original location of this site is reasonably well documented so although the circle is now non existant it was at this location (within I'm guessing 10-20m). The current location is out by a massive amount so this would improve things a bit. The original stone holes may also still be there and possibly discoverable via GPR so finding the exact location of the original from this new location would be easier than searching an entire village for filled holes.
I suppose this all assumes that the original location for a site was in some way significant beyond merely somewhere convenient for the original builders.
