More about the rune stone from Malt

[below is auto-translation from Danish]

The rune stone from Malt was found in 1987 in a meadow toward Kongeåen. It was actually a large stone that had long been in the way, and was eventually sent a machine down to move it. Great was the surprise when the operator got turned stone, and there appeared runes up. It's rare to make new discoveries of rune stones, and the Museum moved quickly to look at found. It is now in the museum's entrance hall.

The stone houses Jyllands longest runic text. It is also unusual in being from 800 AD, quite early compared to most rune stones. And so we find it difficult to decipher the text. The rune experts who have looked at the stone for us, at least come up with several different readings of what it really was the Vikings Kongeåen would tell. It does not make the stone less exciting.

In the room there are also original wall paintings from the 1700s, showing great Roman busts in niches. They were whitewashed, but was recovered by Sønderskov restoration in 1986-1992.
