St Winning's Well (Kirkgunzeon)
St Winning's Well (Kirkgunzeon) submitted by Anne T : Looking down into the bowl of the well. Easier to see the stones forming a very rough bowl with the eye, rather than in the photograph. Large stone(s) in the foreground, then an arc of rough-worked stone-work courses from the right hand side across to the middle of the photograph, well hidden by shrubbery. Perhaps best seen in winter? No water was visible at the time of our visit. Said by the ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Re: Kirkgunzeon by Anonymous on Thursday, 20 February 2020
I work in Kirkgunzeon, have never seen a stone circle. Someone came to our office asking where the circle is once. I will ask around, see if anyone knows anything.

    Thanks - Canmore say:

A stone circle near Kirkgunzeon manse was destroyed between 1790 and 1870. (Information from J Gillespie)
    F R Coles 1895

According to Mrs J Moffat (The Shop, Kirkgunzeon), the oldest inhabitant in the village, a circle of stones c.30 ft in diameter with a small mound in the centre stood on flat ground at NX 8657 6668. Over the years successive farmers have removed the larger stones and now only the slight mound, c.4.0 m diam. x 0.3 m high, with several clearance stones on top, survives to mark the site of the stone circle.
Visited by OS (RD) 8 July 1969

So possibly there is something still to be seen there - photos of the location are very welcome.

    The Canmore link http://canmore.org.uk/collection/175202 says
"Description Kirkgunzeon, church, stone circle (site of), enclosure (possible), ring ditches Aerial photograph" which suggests the circle is no longer standing.

Canmore's archaeology notes from July 1969 confirm this
    https://canmore.org.uk/site/64940/kirkgunzeon
I don't know if the slight mound with stones on top which it refers to would be visible today.

Re: Kirkgunzeon by Anonymous on Saturday, 16 November 2002
The map reference given seems to be for a location in Kirkgunzeon village. I have passed through Kirkgunzeon [it is very small] many times and am not aware of any stone circle there.

Kirkgunzeon is an early Christian localtion, perhaps dating as far back as 6th century AD. From 1160, it was rented out to monks from Holm Cultram abbey in Cumbria, along with all of what is now the parish of Kirkgunzeon.

If there was a stone circle at Kirkgunzeon village, it would have been commented on as an example of Christianity taking over a pagan site.
