drolaf visited on 15th Jul 2020 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 There is a stone in the large SE gap with just tip showing, mostly buried. A grand view eastwards. someone had put a small stone in another gap.

Greengirl visited on 4th Feb 2020 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 3 A friend had tried to find this site two weeks ago and failed. We had the OS Map and directions from this site, but decided to ascend to the top of the hill first and from the western end of the summit, looking down in a northerly direction, we easily spotted the stone circle.(I also spotted 2 foxes). It would be more difficult to see when the bracken is high. We had parked at Lochrutton Kirk and there is a signpost saying "& Grey Stanes 1/2m". The footpath follows the dry stone dyke to another gate and then a third which leads into a lumpy field with bracken and hawthorn. When the trees end over the wall which runs on your left, turn 90 degrees to your right and you will soon come to the stone circle.

Enki visited on 30th Sep 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 A bit of a walk (and this might not be the best route if bracken is high!)- we parked in lane beside farm buildings opposite South Castlehill and followed track up the hill to a ruined cottage and 2 barns. Bear right and continue following track uphill. Once you clear the trees, pass 2 thorn trees and turn right where there is a line of some low rocks. Keep going in that direction through bracken, crossing another track until you come to a second track. Follow this to the right towards the ridge of the hill and the circle is just to the right.

Easthill
Easthill submitted by Postman : That's why I had to come back. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A small stone circle setting on top of a group of hills called Easthill. The circle sits on top of a grassy knoll overlooking Dumfries, with a commanding view of the north, east and south. The circle itself is made up of ten stones with a few other stones that have rolled down the hill over time that could have been part of this circle. There is a possibly aligned stone lying a hundred and fifty feet to the east.

Most of these stones have now fallen over, with they bolder type appearance. Wether these were meant to stand in the first place is a question we may never know. It is said that their are three cup-marks in the North-West corner of the circle on one of the stones, this also could be weathering or pitting of the stones as the stones them self were of a sandstone type.

The circle is also known as Seven Gray Stones or Seven Gray Stanes which is a misconception as it has ten stones and a diameter of 23 meters, in a slight elliptical shape. It is recorded on Canmore ID 65729 when the last entry was for 2nd July 1964 and which read: "The location of this stone circle is on a slight platform whch appears to be natural. In all, ten stones were counted; the smallest stones are almost flush with the ground while the largest Two are 0.9m and 0.6m high respectively with girths of c.3.0m. On the second stone round westwards from the two stones set close together (see Coles' plan) is a very small cup mark, possibly artificial. Most of the stones bear natural pittings but no other possible cup-marks were seen. The circle about 23.0m in diameter, is obscured by dense bracken."

Like Postman I approached from the SE, the 711 road in 2018 and searched in vain. This year I parked by the derelict church and it was easy to find. There is a stone in the large SE gap with just tip showing, mostly buried. A grand view eastwards.

This Circle is situated in a large field about 500 yards from the road.

Watch out for cattle... and mud.
