Possible Standing Stones in Cumbria

Two very large standing stones which would have stood I estimate 3-4m high and are now laying down and broken. It is easy to see all the pieces and they are where they would have stopped if thesr very large standing stones had fallen or been pushed over a long time ago. The broken parts have lichen and moss growth on them. These standing stones may have alignment with Skiddaw on the horizon. There are also smaller outlying stones which may form parts of a stone circle, this requires further investigation.

Aughertree fell standing stones submitted by Meaty_Mungus : Photo taken from the base of the Southern standing stone looking Northwards. I have places my compass on the stone to give some scale. My compass which has measurements on it is 80mm long x 50mm wide. This isn't bedrock as it is clear to see that the angles of the pieces at the top surface are different and this is because the stone has broken when it has fallen over. I placed my compass on the tip of the broken stone to give some scale. My compasss has measurements on it and is 80mm long x 50mm wide. From this photo angle it is possible to see how these stone pieces would have fitted together. (Vote or comment on this photo)

The larger stone to the North (Left of photo) is approximately 4m length and 2m width at the base tapering to a point which is now broken as you can see in the other photos. You can see how the stone has broken when it fell over. All the pieces appear to be there and you can visualise how it would have looked if it was stood up. When looking towards the horizon the top of Skiddaw mountain can be seen just above the hill that this stone stands on so it ...

I was really curious about the Aughertree Fell Stone Circle and Standing Stone sites very kindly submitted by Meaty_Mungus. Plugging the grid references into both Pastscape and Historic England, the latter comes up with a large scheduled area - see Historic England List ID 1013392, which describes "Three Romano-British settlements, an irregular aggregate field system, and a bowl barrow on Aughertree Fell". Pastscape comes up with 11 different sites, including Bronze Age barrows, field systems, quarries, lime kilns, a holy well and post-medieval shooting stands. This certainly sounds like a complex site, and I'd be really interested to see the photos.

    Thank you for your comments Anne. Especially the bit about the post medieval shooting stands. I took photos of at least half a dozen circular walled enclosures with a narrow entrane these are roughly 2 metres diameter and the walls about 1 metre high and spaced at regular intervals in a line. This makes perfect sense now when I look at the modern day versions. I will post details and photos.
