Anne T saw from a distance on 29th May 2016 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Elvaplain Stone Circle, Setmurthy, Cumbria: After having seen the tumulus and settlements at Aughertree Fell we set off for Elva Hill. With a stunning image on the Visit Cumbria website, which told us this although this stone circle was on private land, it could be approached by a footpath, we found Elva Plain farm and the footpath up to Elva Hill easily enough. With well kept sheep and their large lambs, we enjoyed the sunshine as we walked up the hill. But, and there was a big BUT - the farmer had tied the gates up so strongly with thick twine it was like trying to untie the Gordian knot. With four gates to get through, and some of them wired shut, we could only see this stone circle from afar. Frustrating. If the farmer had been around, I would have asked (nicely) for access to the field. Whilst the stones are largely flat and just visible above ground (between the sheep!), this stone circle is in a stunning location, looking out over Bassenthwaite Lake in the valley to the south west and the fells beyond. Elva Hill (now quarried) lies to the north.

kthdsn saw from a distance on 9th Aug 2014 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 4 We couldn't find the right footpath to enter the field, but we saw the circle from further up the hillside.

emerald visited on 1st Jan 2005 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Found this circle on a local map and decided to visit, it takes a bit of working out where it is as it is not visible feom thw road and getting through a few fieks of nosy cows tongwt there was an adventure in itself. I loved it there though- great energies although many stones seem to be missing

Stone Circle in Cumbria. Postman writes: Spring equinox sunshine pours over the dramatic horizon. More photos on our page. The equinox sun rises from a notch in the hills. There are also notches north and south of due east, could these be possible solstice notches? I wouldn't cross a continent to get here, but I would drive up a motorway, along a dual carriageway and then walk through a farm.

For more information see Pastscape Monument No. 9471, an extract from which reads: "A large regular stone circle of 15 pink granite boulders located on a relatively level terrace on the southern slopes of Elva Hill. The arrangement of stones forms an almost perfect circle with an internal diameter of 33.5m. The 15 stones are all that remain visible of an original number of about 30; of these, those in the NE quadrant are level with the ground, one on the east side has recently become partly buried, and the remainder of the stones have fallen, with the possible exception of the stone due west of centre which stands to a height of 0.7m. Excavation of other stone circles suggest that they range in date from the Late Neolithic to the Middle Bronze Age (c.2400-1000 BC). "

Comparable with Castlerigg due to its large size and mountain vistas this would've been highly consecrated ground. The views are amazing on a clear day but the circle or remaining stones are not, having lost over half its stone count and those that are remaining are very small or have fallen. Elvaplain submitted by Anne T : This is Elva Plain Stone Circle from the field just south of the Elva Hill quarry. These field gates had been wired shut - a clear sign to keep out. The location is stunning. It would have been lovely to sit on the grass in the sunshine admiring the view over Bassenthwaite Lake (in the valley out of sight in this photo) to the fells beyond.

Elvaplain
Elvaplain submitted by Anne T : This is the stone circle, with the stones lying flat to the ground, from the gate to the field it lies in. These gates were tied with thick twine - much like a Gordion Knot. Considering this is on the Visit Cumbria website, it was frustrating not to be allowed into the field.

Gorgeous little stone circle, off the beaten track & not well known (I think it makes it even more special).
Didn't see the signpost from the farm, we directed ourselves from the road & luckily found it after the cows taking some interest of us stomping across a field!
Otherwise known as the fairy hill and probably known as the Elves hill (viking name for Elves is Elva)
Lovely welcoming energies, dowsed here to find where the missing stones should be, would love to revisit, probably my second favourite circle after Castlerigg

A lovely site on the open hill. The stones themselves were quite low and don't look spectacular unless you are really interested. The circle is on gently rising ground on the hillside. It was easy to reach from a footpath signposted from the road and from the farm nearby.
