The bronze aged stone cist of Helgoland was discovered in 1892 during an examination of a round barrow named Lütge Berg (meaning "small mountain"). At that time the latter barrow had been the last remaining of a former cemetery at Helgoländer Oberland, the high plain of the main island. The cist itself was comparatively well preserved.

The cist, according to an older report built in a comparatively lavish form, dates from the 16th century BC.
It's the only preserved relict of the island's Bronze age.
At that time Helgoland, permanently inhabited already since the Neolithic, had been wealthy due to the exploitation of copper.

The stone cist consisted of shellbearing limestone (Muschelkalk).
Its inner size was (roughly estimated) about 1 x 2 metres.
It contained a male burial.

Among the grave goods were a dagger and an ornamental needle.
These grave goods went lost during WW2.

After the excavation the cist was brought to Berlin.
Here at Neues Museum it's on display in the prehistoric section of the museum, a few floors below the bust of Nefertiti.

The coordinates above relate to the original location of the tomb.
Its new home at Neues Museum Berlin is located at 52.5202N, 13.3979E.

A 1:1 replica of the cist can be seen in front of the Museum Helgoland since 2014.
