TheDruid-3x3 who submitted this site says: "This is a site of a Prehistoric Circle Fort that had a Memorial Column built on top of it to honor Colonel Paget who was Wellington's Calvary Commander at the Battle of Waterloo.

I found a record of this Circle Fort mentioned on Google Maps so while visiting other Ancient Celtic Sacred Sites, I ran over and got Pictures of the Stone Defensive Ramparts of this Site"

Admin note: The fort itself is recorded by Coflein as NPRN 32543, the 'Marquis of Anglesey's Column', and tells us: "1816, Greek doric column, ashlar, to first Marquess, architect - T Harrnon. Inside hill fort, stair inside has slits, narrow platform".

Awens to All:

When I was an the Gwesty Cerrig Bran Hotel, I did the Google on Llanfairpwll Village looking to find information on their local Bus Routes when I came up this image on Google Maps:

www.bowlandcentral.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=45239&d=1736701310

Google Maps showed that Craig y Dinas was located just a bit South of the Paget Column. I then checked MP and found that there was no listing on MP for this Site. I therefore thought that I had come upon something New for MP Website.

But doing the Google Search on Llanfairpwll again, the Links attached gave me the information on the proper location of the Craig y Dinas as being at SH624230 and already being listed on MP Website:
www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=19405

So someone with Google erroneously listed Craig y Dinas as being part of the Marquis of Anglesey's Column instead of it's proper location in County Gwynedd.

Therefore due to an Error with Google Searches, it put me onto something that I thought was New but ended up getting Wrong Information instead.

Perhaps this should be renamed more accurately as "Craig y Dinas Hillfort, Site of, Llanfairpwll" as in Gwynedd Archaeological Trust's record.
"Prehistoric Circle Fort" is not accepted terminology. "Ring forts" are known, and mainly found in Ireland, Cornwall and some in South Wales.

Sadly, the Hillfort explorer will have little to see at this site, the last traces of bank and ditch were noted in 1937, and subsequent surveys by archaeologists cannot find them. The site remains in the GAT records for anyone doing research.

Hi, w650marion, Many thanks for both your comments. At Andy B (our Editor-in-Chief)'s suggestion, I've amended the site page name, deleted a few of the more obvious rock outcrop images, and updated the main site page image. I hope this now more accurately reflects the nature of this site, and encourages people to visit. In the meantime, I'll keep looking for more information about the original hillfort - if anyone else can help with information, that would be gratefully received. Many thanks!

I agree with w650 marion. It’s not a prehistoric circle its a modern circle local leisure area. ,

There is scant evidence of there being a hillfort.
The hillfort on an error on googlemaps and is the real hillfort near Tal y bont
that one looks worth a visit

Gwynedd Archaeological Trust refers to this as "Craig y Dinas Hillfort (Site of) Llanfairpwll"

It says "A site of uncertain identification. Possible remains of a fort on a flat-topped rocky outcrop but no evidence of any artificial banks on the approach to the promontory, which is well defended naturally by steep rock faces. There is a house and garden on the north-east side, which could have destroyed or hidden the bank and ditch recorded in 1937. Without some genuine remains, the status of this site must remain uncertain. Excavation is neede to evaluate the site. (Smith, 2005)"

archwilio.org.uk/arch/query/page.php?watprn=GAT2704&dbname=gat&tbname=core

I think Prehistoric Circle Fort is a misnomer.
